Rest in Peace - Pauline Cecily Matthews (1932-2026)

Pauline Matthews, wife of the late Bishop Ralph Matthews, 11th Bishop of Waiapu (1979-1983), died peacefully in Taupō Hospital on Sunday 2 August, surrounded by her loving family.

A devoted supporter of Bishop Ralph's ministry, Pauline served alongside him in parishes across Hastings, Waipukurau, Taupō and Gisborne, while also contributing actively to Anglican women's groups, including Mothers' Union and Young Wives and Family Fellowship. Alongside her church involvement, she maintained a distinguished nursing career, working in hospitals throughout the Diocese and as a Public Health Nurse in Napier.

After Bishop Ralph's death, Pauline married Colin Baker in 1987. Together they later retired to Taupō, where Pauline was an enthusiastic member of the local bowling club and enjoyed extensive travel with Colin before his death in 2012.

Pauline will be remembered for her energy, compassion, and deep Christian faith. Above all, she was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose love and care for others touched many lives.

A private service will be held.
